Thomas and Catherine Cross

In 1869, the Thomas Cross Family, along with a group of families, migrated to Michigan and settled in Wheatland Township, Mecosta County. Because it was inexpensive land, he was able to purchase 40 acres, for the price of a horse. Thomas owned a total of 160 acres.

Thomas and Catherine had twelve children: Elizabeth, John, Joseph, Mary, Elsworth, Thomas, Edward, Catherine Jane, Amos, Ida, Priscilla, and James W.

The family's first house was on a tract of land, two miles north of Remus. At that time there was no east-west road.

Thomas farmed the land that he had cleared and in the winter season, he was in the lumbering business. After the lumbering business started, the first road was made from Mt. Pleasant to Big Rapids. It was called the State Road. This road bisected the Cross property. Thomas and Catherine's first house was a log house, built on the north side of the road. Later, a two-story frame house was built on the south side of the road. This house still stands.

Thomas and Catherine's descendants gather every year on the Third Saturday in July to celebrate heritage and reminisce.
