Thomas William Cross

The legacy of Thomas W. Cross lives on through the many generations.  The love for his fellow man and the seeds of his faith, have taken deep root.  These are cultivated by many of his descendants and nourished by the continuing love of God.

Thomas William Cross was born February 1, 1826 in Louden County, Virginia.  He lived in Virginia until 1851, when he moved to Hocking County, Ohio at the age of 25.  He was the son of Mr. Lee and Ms. Cross.
 

· On October 11, 1851, he married Catherine B. Harper

· On June 22, 1863, he enlisted in the army in Athens, Ohio

· On September 20, 1865, he mustered out

· In 1869, he and his family left Ohio for Mecosta County, Michigan
 

Thomas died April 24, 1897, after a long illness and is buried in Morgan Cemetery, now known as Wheatland Cemetery in Mecosta County, Michigan.



On June 22, 1863, Thomas enlisted into the Army in Athens, Ohio. He spent almost three years with the Wagner Co. C% Regiment, United States Colored Infantry of the Civil War. He served with the Ambulance Detail in Virginia and the Carolinas. He received one-half the pay rate of a white soldier because he was colored. Thomas mustered out of the Army on September 20, 1865. He returned to Ohio and lived there until 1869.



 

In Washington D.C., a monument honoring the United States Colored Troops that served in the Civil War.

Groups of Cross descendants have visited this monument. All were impressed and moved by its magnificence. They found Thomas W. Cross's name along with other names e been related to the Old Settlers.
